Just a short distance from home a wander to the Duncansby Stacks from the car park at Duncansby Head, John o'Groats, makes for a pleasant outing. The dawn conditions were looking reasonable for the chance of a photo or two on the 21/10/07 so I headed out for some air. This shot looking south was taken just after sunrise at about 7.45am and shows the mainland on the right, Main Stack in the middle and smaller Witches Hat Stack on the left (this seems to be a name given by climbers rather than a commonly used local name? See SMC Northern Highlands Volume 2). The rocks of Caithness are commonly known as the Caithness Flags which belong to the Middle Devonian age. For the most part the Caithness Flags are made up of grey - green mudstones, siltstones and sandstones but on this part of the east coast they take on a deep red-orange colour more commonly associated with Devonian rocks elsewhere. Here they are picked out well by the glow from the early morning sun.
