The road over Glen Loth is an interesting diversion from the main A9 road to the north coast of Scotland. A few miles north of Brora, a small single track road climbs steeply into Glen Loth, eventually arriving at the hamlet of Kildonan. The road climbs up to around 350m altitude (be warned this road is not maintained during the winter and it is a long walk out if you get stuck!) and offers lovely views of the coast, hills of Caithness and north-west towards Ben Loyal near the village of Tongue. The Moray coast is also visible from this location.

This picture was one of the few on this website taken from the car. Usually the roadside does not offer very interesting perspectives but at around 6pm on a March evening, a group of around 50 red deer were gathering on the hillside in front of the setting sun as I was driving south. 

Although uninhabited, Glen Loth has a number of interesting facts about it. It is one of the last documented places that a Wolf was killed in Scotland in around 1700. An interesting account of this can be found at lastwolf.net which tells the story of a hunter named Polson and his colourful account of the event.
