Taken at pretty much the same time as Sgritheall across Barrisdale this photograph looks south east to one of the iconic peaks of the west, Sgurr na Ciche. In the foreground are the summit ridge of Luinne Bheinn and its south east top. Beyond on the far left of the picture is I think Gairich, to the right are Sgurr Mor and the peaks of Sgurr nan Coireachan and Garbh Cioch Beag and Mhor along the ridge towards Sgurr na Ciche, the pointed peak in the middle right of the photo. Ben Aden is the prominent smaller peak (887m) infront of Sgurr na Ciche. The distant peak on the far right is probably Gulvain which lies between Loch Arkaig and Loch Eil. The summit of Sgurr na Ciche is viewed as a shapely cone from many directions and lies in the heart of remote country between the western end of Loch Arkaig and Loch Nevis. These are rough, remote and beautiful hills which can provide great days. As of 2008 my single ascent of Sgurr na Ciche was a drab plod through October mist (very different to the day of this October photograph), but I was much luckier in March 1999 when climbing Sgurr nan Coireachan and Sgurr Mor on a stunning day of snow and sun. The traverse of these peaks on virgin snow without sight of another soul all day was a privilege indeed (if only I'd had a half decent camera with me!). |
