Photo Details

The six wind turbines at Forss are perched on the north coast of Scotland, facing the Pentland Firth and offer a good vantage point towards the Sutherland hills of Ben Loyal and Ben Hope some 35 miles to the west. These 2 summits are just visible to the left of the turbine tower, surrounded by a milky red sky.

This shot was taken on a September evening at 8:30pm. A moderate breeze was blowing and the whirring of the turbine blades and the waves crashing onto the nearby shore made this an interesting place to be. Accessing this area is fairly easy with a short walk from the main road. However, I left it a bit late in the day to get set up and ended up stumbling over the mossy grass to make sure I had a view of the mountains to the west. Returning to the car after darkness had fallen was even more interesting without a torch, which had been left in the car in the rush to get in position!

Forss used to be an American military base although today the buildings have been converted into general office accommodation which serves the decommissioning of the nearby Dounreay nuclear facility. The windfarm project is one of many that are springing up across the highlands and causing a great deal of controversy. The British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) site is a good information source for those wishing more details of wind energy in Scotland.
