Photo Details

This location looks like it could be in the Antarctic but it is actually only 25 miles from Edinburgh, taken on a perfect morning in early January. The temperature was around -8 degrees C and the whole of the Forth valley covered in a dense blanket of fog rising to around 400m altitude.

This is the summit of Ben Cleuch (721m), the highest point in the Ochil Hills. The usual view from this picture is of the River Forth and the towns and villages that dot the landscape to the south. Behind the photographer, the landscape could not be much more of a contrast with the panorama stretching across the rolling summits of the Ochil Hills to the high hills of Breadalbane. A good account of the route to climb this hill and some pictures of how it looks in summer can be found on Undiscovered Scotland
