Laguna Lejia lies high up on an old dirt road from Chile to Argentina. The lake is mineral rich and from many angles, milky green in colour. In the background lie the volcanoes Aguas Calientes (5924m) and to the right of the picture, Pili or Acamarachi (6046m). We attempted to climb the latter 3 days later but unfortunately had to turn back just short of the summit as we had not properly acclimatised to the altitude. |

This is a very lonely place and during our 5 days exploring the wilderness, we saw no other people and virtually no signs of life at all. Camping near the shores of the lake was wonderful, watching the sun go down and the freezing cold night begin. Luckily we had a 4x4 for transport which also gave a comfortable place to watch the landscape and catch up on a bit of reading using a head-torch and huddled in a down jacket.
