Seymour Tower lies 2 kilometres from the shores of Grouville in the south eastern corner of Jersey in the Channel Islands. The tower was built in 1782 in response to a French invasion attempt a year earlier. The tower can be reached on foot at low tide when the sea retreats a huge distance from the shore in one of the largest of tidal ranges in Europe. For those unlucky enough to be caught out by the speed the tide can return, a metal shelter is located half way to the shore, just visible below the rising sun. This photograph was taken at sunrise on a November morning shortly before exploring the area by kyack. |
