Taken from the summit of Stob Coire Sgreamhach on the south side of Glencoe this photo shows the silhouette of the mountains summit projected in a broken spectre effect on to the top of the cloud with the spectre surrounded by a glory (a rainbow like feature around the spectre http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Glory_%28optical_phenomenon%29 & http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brocken_spectre). Stob Coire nan Lochan is on the left and Ben Nevis, Carn Mor Dearg and the Aonachs in the middle distance on the right. Down in the valley the day looked pretty grey and miserable and the cloud base was hanging around 700m, but on reaching 950m on the north ridge of Stob Coire Sgreamhach a world of sun and snow was revealed. Immediately a glory appeared on the top of the mist nearby which followed me up the remainder of the ridge. At the same time an unseen helicopter was flying around in the cloud in the Hidden Valley immediatley below. I had the camera out hoping for it to appear above the cloud close by but it didn't oblige. From Stob Coire Sgreamhach I continued to Bidean nam Bian and Stob Coire nam Beith (top ticking) where I got another couple of decent photos. I then descended via the bealach between Bidean and Stob Coire nan Lochan into the Hidden Valley to complete an excellent day on the hill. |
