The picture was taken at sunrise around (6am) at the El Tatio geyser field, 80 km north of San Pedro de Atacama. In the early morning, the air is still and steam gently rises from the whole valley. But don't be fooled by all the steam. This place is freezing cold early in the morning due to the altitude and absence of cloud cover. You also have to watch your step as the guide books frequently tell stories of people who have fallen through the thin earth's crust and boiled alive in the subterranean broth! Luckily, on this particular morning, the only boiling was eggs that tour guides were cooking for their clients in the bubbling pools. Sunrise is the best time to witness and photograph the geysers for the clear blue skies and also absence of any wind which gathers momentum as soon as the sun begins to warm the thin atmosphere.
