Photo Description

Strathdearn lies at the northern end of the Monadhliath mountains running south west to north east and carries the waters of the River Findhorn from its tributaries in the very heart of the Monadhliath through Tomatin, the heart of the Strathdearn community. This photo was taken on a mid December afternoon, the sun barely clearing the hills along the strath. More information about the Strathdearn area, community and history can be found here.

Unfortunately the hills of the northern Monadhliath are rapidly being blighted by the inappropriate industrial development of wild uplands for windfarms. Our Geographic Information System (GIS) analysis of one such planned development at Allt Duine above Kincraig can be read here. The results are shocking, illustrating just how widely visible massive wind turbines are and how they will impact the views from both the high hills and lower slopes of the Highlands. The Scottish Government is currently intent on pursuing a short sighted energy policy that is leading to the desecration of the Highlands most valuable resource, its stunning landscape. This can only be to the detriment of tourism, the areas most important economic activity.
