Photo Description

Sunset over beautiful, remote Sandwood Bay. Am Buachaille, The Shephard standing proud and the tiny islands of Am Balg offshore.

Sandwood Bay is accessed from Blairmore, just north-west of Kinlochbervie and is arguably the most beautiful beach in Scotland. Its white golden sands are almost completely untouched, partly because it lies on the north west coast of Scotland but also as it requires a 4 mile trek to get there on foot or mountain bike from the road access at Blairmore. This picture was taken in August, late in the evening when the days are still long at this time of year in the far north. Behind the beach are a series of dunes where we set up camp for the night and had the beach to ourselves.

It was a calm evening with the waves lapping gently on the shore. However, one could imagine what it would be like standing here during a storm as the beach faces north west and has nothing to shelter it from the full force of the north Atlantic. There are many stories of shipwrecks and ghosts associated with Sandwood Bay and the nearby abandoned Sandwood Cottage, located 1km inland on the track to the beach. Spending a night in this wonderful isolated and most beautiful spot, it is not difficult to see how it has captured the imagination of those who have visited.
